  • How to conduct reflective conversations that actually inspire real reflection
  • How and when to conduct facilitative conversations with individual and groups of teachers
  • How to use coaching conversations to move teachers’ practice
  • How and when to use directive conversations
  • Strategies for raising teacher will and skill
  • How to use strategic conversations to make your teacher evaluation system be more effective

Day One: Understanding Will and Skill Leaders will learn the four types of teachers and how to differentiate their leadership to meet each teacher’s needs. Leaders will discover the number one leadership mistake most leader’s make and how to avoid it. They will practice “micro-slicing” and learn how to get to the root of a teacher’s practice. Then, we’ll break down your teacher evaluation instrument to help leaders recognize the four types of teachers and connect your instrument to this framework. In the end, leaders will have a better understanding of your instrument, know how to identify the root cause of a teacher’s difficulty, and have a framework they can use to provide teachers with effective feedback and leadership.

Day Two: Improving Teacher Will We’ll break down the four types of teachers so leaders will know exactly how to shape their leadership to motivate each of the four types of teachers. Leaders will learn specific ways to discover what motivated each of their teachers and specific approaches to motivate their teachers based on their will drivers. They will get plenty of time to collaborate with their colleagues, practice their feedback skills, and plenty of strategies they can use give effective feedback to teachers aligned with your own teacher evaluation system.

Day Three: Improving Teacher Skill Leaders will focus on building teacher skill. First, they will learn how to diagnose teacher skill based on your own teacher evaluation system. They will unpack your teacher evaluation system and learn how to shape their feedback to best help teachers to improve. And, they will learn 8 ways they can improve teacher skill and how they can differentiate their support to meet each teacher where he or she is. Finally, Leaders will learn how to put this all together so that they can balance competing demands and do the work that is most important.

Day Four: Conducting Strategic Conversations Leaders will learn how to follow up with teachers and help all teachers move towards mastery. They will discover the four strategic conversational approaches and see video models for each conversation and they will learn how to tailor each conversational type to the four types of teachers. They will also get to practice strategic conversations and learn how to use them to move every teacher towards mastery.
