14 years ago, I quit my job . . .

Before I started Mindsteps, I was an assistant principal rising quickly through the ranks.

I was good at what I did and was on the verge of having my own school.

Outside, I was successful, but inside, I felt like I was suffocating.

  • I was working nights and weekends and never had enough time to do the things I loveddoing outside of education like travel, spending time with my family, and writing.
  • I felt like all I did was put out fires. I had learned a lot and had developed a ton of skills. I wanted to use my talents in a more meaningful way.
  • I wasn’t loving what I was doing, but I felt that the only way to advance in education was to become a principal and then maybe get a Central Office Job or become a superintendent.

I knew that I wanted to do something more, maybe even start my own consulting career, but I was scared.

You see, the school system was all I knew. It was safe.

But the more successful I became, the more trapped I felt.

Then one day, they offered me a principalship.

I felt like I couldn’t breath.

I knew that I was supposed to say "yes". I even formed my lips to accept.

But what came out of my mouth was,...

“I quit.”

I had no insurance.

No income.

I didn’t even have a plan really.

All I had was a dream to be an education consultant.

And I knew that if I didn’t do something right then and there, my dream would never happen.

I had to decide . . .

Do I keep putting my dream off? Or do I pursue my true passion?

Most Educators who dream of being educational consultants never take the leap because they are afraid.

I chose to pursue my passion and began building my business while I finished out my last year as a school administrator.

I knew nothing about building a business.

Nothing.

So, I spent hundreds of hours studying business books, taking classes, reading everything I could get my hands on.

The trouble was, a lot of the business models I looked at didn’t fit education.

They were focused on profit and loss statements, balance sheets, sales tactics and creating elaborate business plans.

That wasn’t what I wanted to spend all my time doing.

I was still a teacher at heart. I wanted to serve my clients and do meaningful work, not pour over balance sheets and sit on the phone all day making sleazy sales pitches.

But that’s what all the business books were teaching and I didn’t have any real models or mentors to help me figure things out.

I felt so overwhelmed and began to wonder if maybe I had made a mistake.

Maybe I wasn’t cut out for business. Maybe I should go and beg them for my job back.

Then one day, I completed my business plan. It had taken me weeks but it was finally done!

The only problem was, once I was finished, I still didn't know what to do next. How was I supposed to use it? How would it help me?

The more I looked at it, the more I realized that my business plan was a complete work of fiction.

Sure, I had filled in all the right blanks, but I had made most of it up just to put something in the right boxes.

I wanted to cry. Here I was doing what the books said to do, and yet I still felt lost. That business plan wasn't going to get me clients. It wasn't going to set up my books. It wasn't going to pay my bills.

So I put my lovely printed and bound plan in a file (where it remains to this day), picked up the phone called a friend who was a successful entrepreneur and invited him to lunch.

We went to IHOP and over a plate of pancakes he helped me get unstuck and figure out what my next steps were.

What he told me was a little shocking  -- I'll get to exactly what he said in a sec -- but as I drove home from that lunch, I felt as if a huge weight had been taken off my shoulders. In fact, I felt less stress than I had in weeks! Imagine, just 1 hour with someone in the know was worth more than 2 months of reading books and random blog posts trying to figure things out for myself. 

The secret he shared with me that day was this: I didn't need to waste my time writing a business plan, choosing a business name, and figuring out how to put up a website.

The FIRST thing I needed to do if I was going to have a solid business that would last was develop the right STRATEGY and set up ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS.

If I did that first, then all the other stuff -- the logo, the corporate filings, the business cards, the website, etc. -- would be MUCH easier.
