I hear you and I get it.
14 years ago, I quit my job . . .
Before I started Mindsteps, I was an assistant principal rising quickly through the ranks.
I was good at what I did and was on the verge of having my own school.
Outside, I was successful, but inside, I felt like I was suffocating.
- I was working nights and weekends and never had enough time to do the things I loveddoing outside of education like travel, spending time with my family, and writing.
- I felt like all I did was put out fires. I had learned a lot and had developed a ton of skills. I wanted to use my talents in a more meaningful way.
- I wasn’t loving what I was doing, but I felt that the only way to advance in education was to become a principal and then maybe get a Central Office Job or become a superintendent.
I knew that I wanted to do something more, maybe even start my own consulting career, but I was scared.
You see, the school system was all I knew. It was safe.
But the more successful I became, the more trapped I felt.
Then one day, they offered me a principalship.
I felt like I couldn’t breath.
I knew that I was supposed to say "yes". I even formed my lips to accept.
But what came out of my mouth was,...
I had no insurance.
I didn’t even have a plan really.
All I had was a dream to be an education consultant.
And I knew that if I didn’t do something right then and there, my dream would never happen.
I had to decide . . .
Do I keep putting my dream off? Or do I pursue my true passion?
Most Educators who dream of being educational consultants never take the leap because they are afraid.
I chose to pursue my passion and began building my business while I finished out my last year as a school administrator.
I knew nothing about building a business.
So, I spent hundreds of hours studying business books, taking classes, reading everything I could get my hands on.
The trouble was, a lot of the business models I looked at didn’t fit education.
They were focused on profit and loss statements, balance sheets, sales tactics and creating elaborate business plans.
That wasn’t what I wanted to spend all my time doing.
I was still a teacher at heart. I wanted to serve my clients and do meaningful work, not pour over balance sheets and sit on the phone all day making sleazy sales pitches.
But that’s what all the business books were teaching and I didn’t have any real models or mentors to help me figure things out.
I felt so overwhelmed and began to wonder if maybe I had made a mistake.
Maybe I wasn’t cut out for business. Maybe I should go and beg them for my job back.
Then one day, I completed my business plan. It had taken me weeks but it was finally done!
The only problem was, once I was finished, I still didn't know what to do next. How was I supposed to use it? How would it help me?
The more I looked at it, the more I realized that my business plan was a complete work of fiction.
Sure, I had filled in all the right blanks, but I had made most of it up just to put something in the right boxes.
I wanted to cry. Here I was doing what the books said to do, and yet I still felt lost. That business plan wasn't going to get me clients. It wasn't going to set up my books. It wasn't going to pay my bills.
So I put my lovely printed and bound plan in a file (where it remains to this day), picked up the phone called a friend who was a successful entrepreneur and invited him to lunch.
We went to IHOP and over a plate of pancakes he helped me get unstuck and figure out what my next steps were.
What he told me was a little shocking -- I'll get to exactly what he said in a sec -- but as I drove home from that lunch, I felt as if a huge weight had been taken off my shoulders. In fact, I felt less stress than I had in weeks! Imagine, just 1 hour with someone in the know was worth more than 2 months of reading books and random blog posts trying to figure things out for myself.
The secret he shared with me that day was this: I didn't need to waste my time writing a business plan, choosing a business name, and figuring out how to put up a website.
The FIRST thing I needed to do if I was going to have a solid business that would last was develop the right STRATEGY and set up ESSENTIAL SYSTEMS.
If I did that first, then all the other stuff -- the logo, the corporate filings, the business cards, the website, etc. -- would be MUCH easier.
That's what gave me such relief. Rather than try to do everything, he helped me focus on what was most essential and create systems around that. Those systems would allow me to build a good business foundation so that I could focus on making the difference I really wanted to make.
Once I figured out how to set up my Essential Systems I was able to skip the trial and error and get my business up and running quickly. With the right systems in place, I was able to:
It's time to stop putting off your dreams.
Within a single year, I’d built a business that was as successful as education consulting businesses that had been in business for 5 or more year
And the best part?
I got to do it in a way that worked best for me.
I know you’ve been thinking about becoming a consultant for some time now, but you haven’t made the leap.
You CAN build your own education consulting business of your dreams.
You just need the right systems.
Look, you don’t have a lot of time to pour through mountains of business books, sit through hours of free webinars, or go back to school and get an MBA.
If you’re working full time and you’re already putting in more hours than you have trying to do a good job at work.
And if you already started your business, you're too busy trying to get clients and serve them.
It’s not that you want to cut corners, but you don’t have the time to waste on things that may not work for you. You just want the essentials.
You’re willing to do whatever it takes to build a successful business. You’re just not sure what steps to take. You need someone to give you a roadmap.
Most new educational consultants spend years trying to figure out how to make consistent revenue and build a name for themselves.
I discovered a simpler way (and I want to share it with you)
To build a profitable business that YOU love, you’ve got to create your own personalized systems that offer you…
- A simple strategy uniquely tailored to your dreams and goals
- A clear plan for attracting YOUR ideal clients
- A profitable way to package and deliver your solution in your unique way
- An easy financial plan that offers you security and while helping you grow your income
- Procedures that give you the freedom to spend time on the work you love instead of being bogged down by administrivia
All in all, you need a clear, step-by-step system to create a business on your own terms and generate consistent income.
I've discovered the 5 Essentials . . .
ESSENTIAL #1: YOU NEED A STRATEGY
You would never teach a lesson without first creating a lesson plan right? So why would you start a business without having a solid strategy.
You probably have been told that you need to start out by creating a business plan. But business plans can be really complicated (just looking at the sample templates on line can be overwhelming).
So when I talk about starting with strategy, I’m not talking about laboring over a complicated business plan. Unless you’re going for big time investors, a business plan is really a waste of time at this stage of the process.
What you need is a simple business strategy. One that gives you just enough direction so that you have clarity about what business you are creating and can confidently more forward, but is not so complicated that you spend all your time planing and never taking action.
I'll help you craft the right strategy -- one that aligns with your passion and goals, gets you started quickly and confidently, and helps you build a solid business that will last for the long-term.
Essential #2: You Need to Attract Your Ideal Customers
Most people think that the hardest part about starting your own education consulting business is getting a steady stream of clients.
But do you know what’s even harder?
Getting the RIGHT clients.
You see, you don’t just want ANY client –
You want to serve people who need and VALUE what you have to offer.
…who treat you like a partner and come to you again and again….
…clients with whom you can actually make a difference.
The problem is, how do you find them?
Market the wrong way and you come off as sleazy and salesy.
But market the right way and your ideal clients will naturally be attracted to you. You won’t have to spend all your time doing sales calls or feeling like you’re begging for business.
Instead, your ideal clients will seek you out and feel excited to work with you.
I’ll help you develop a clear plan to attract your ideal clients – and repel those who will just treat you like a commodity so that you not only keep a steady stream of clients, you’re working with clients who truly value what you do.
Essential #3: You Need to Stand Out
There are thousands of people out there right now calling themselves educational consultants claiming to be experts on anything from differentiated instruction to reaching urban students.
There are thousands more who bill themselves as a coach offering coaching on anything from leadership to reading to math.
A lot of districts even have their own in house coaches and consultants.
How will you stand out and be seen as having something valuable to offer?
In order not to be seen as just another consultant, you need to have a Unique Branded Delivery System that makes you stand out.
Developing your Unique Branded Delivery System doesn’t mean going out and getting a logo, fancy website, and business cards.
It’s a specific process that helps you figure out the unique VALUE you will provide and packaging that value into products and services people rave about.
Do this right, and you will quickly become the go-to expert in your space.
Essential #4: You Need a Financial Plan
There’s nothing wrong with wanting to serve others AND increase your income.
But without the right financial systems in place, many educational consultants work really hard but never get paid what they are worth.
You don’t have to be a financial genius to figure it out. But you do need to understand a few basic business principals if you want to be profitable day one. Things like how to price your products and services, how to read your financial reports, and how to set up your financial system to keep cash flowing into your business.
Once you get the right financial systems in place, you won’t have to put off building your retirement savings or worry about whether or not you’ll be able to afford health insurance.
Instead, you’ll know exactly how much money you need – and have a clear plan to earn it. And once you get your plan working, you’ll quickly double and even triple your income so that you can have the life you want.
Essential #5: You Need SMART Systems
Nobody quits their job to work harder and make LESS money.
And yet, that’s what most educational consultants end up doing.
That’s why you need to put Smart Systems in place from the start.
Without the Smart Systems, you will spend most of your time…
When you build the Smart Systems, you can focus on doing the work you love to do and know that your company is still running smoothly. Plus, the right systems will position your business to scale quickly so that you can have an even bigger impact.
To build a thriving Education Consulting Business and Make a Big Difference, You need all 5 Essentials
If you’re missing any one of these elements, you’ll struggle to get your business off the ground.
But when you have all 5 Essentials in place, you can build a business you love, have the impact you crave, and the income you need.
And I can show you exactly how to do this.
CEO/The Valbrun Consulting Group
Robyn was very instrumental in my journey from executive director in a school district, to CEO of my own consulting company.
Not only did she serve as a model and motivator, but she was a great mentor and thought partner, providing me with guidance and helping me avoid pitfalls.
Learning from her experience and applying the lessons she has learned in over 10 years in business, helped propel my consulting business to heights that I had not imagined.
In just a few years, I was able to leave my job, have clients in my pipeline, a sound financial plan, and solid strategies to grow and sustain my consulting company. Having Robyn’s expertise and guidance gave me the confidence to take the leap, and I have no regrets!
Robyn was incredibly helpful...she is a rock-star!
She listened as I poured my heart out describing all of the things on my to do list that made me feel like I could never catch up.
She gave me a series of simple questions that changed how I managed my business. What can you drop right now? What can you automate? (E.g., billing, call scheduler)? What can you hire out for a personal touch?
I sat down for several hours and sketched out what I really wanted to do. Then I classified my to do list according to those three questions.
What I had left was the work that grew me and my consulting.

My job is already VERY demanding. Won’t building my own consulting business take a lot of time?
Starting your own consulting business doesn’t have to take an enormous amount of time. In fact, you can get your business up and running by the end of the school year in as little as 3 hours per week. The training modules are broken up into short, actionable lessons that allow you to build your business chunk by chunk while you’re working a full-time job.
I’m swamped already. What if I fall behind in the training?
The good news is that this training is 100% on line. You can access it anywhere and any time you want. So, if you fall behind, no worries. You have LIFETIME access so the training will still be here for you and you can pick up again later when you have more time. You can move at whatever pace works for you.
How much work will I need to do?
Building a business does take some work. But because I know you’re busy, I’ve cut the fat and we’ll focus on just the essentials. If you work at the pace of the course, it will generally 3-4 hours per week. But, since you have lifetime access, you can take as much time as you need to complete the work.

I'll let you in on a secret . . .
The people who have made the leap and started their own Education Consulting Businesses had many of the same fears and misgivings you have.
They too were worried if what they had to offer would be something someone would be willing to pay for.
They too worried about what they would do about insurance and retirement plans once they left their full-time jobs.
They too juggled full-time jobs and families and struggled to find time to work on their businesses.
But the difference is, they decided to invest in their businesses and take action even before they felt 100% ready.
So many educators put their dreams off until “someday.”
They wake up in the morning and head to jobs that no longer fulfill them.
They spend their time dreaming of what they could be.
Or maybe they dabble around, put up a website, start a blog, and print up a few business cards, only to end up heading in the wrong direction and not realizing it.
The only way to make your dreams come true is to step outside of your comfort zone and take decisive action.
You don’t have to do something as drastic as quit your job on the spot.
Decisive action for you may mean something as simple as finally getting serious about your ideas and investing in building a real business.
You’ll be amazed at how taking that decisive action will create momentum in your life.
Instead of talking about being a consultant, you’re actually doing what it takes to become one.
Join me today for IMPACT & INCOME
I would love to personally walk you through the steps and help you achieve your dreams.
You can finally have the consulting career you’ve being dreaming about and you won’t have to struggle through alone, feeling confused and unclear about the right next steps.
