This is where it all begins
Mastery cannot be measured in the number of years you’ve been teaching. It is measured by how well you apply the mastery principles to your teaching. Thus, the first step to moving toward mastery is to assess how well you are currently applying the mastery principles to your own practice by taking the Mastery Self-Assessment .
Answer each question as honestly as you can. Think not about what you would like to do, but about what you are currently doing in your own practice. There are no right or wrong answers.
Use the Mastery Self-Assessment Scoring Sheet to keep track of your answers. Next to year number, write your answer to that question in the box provided. When you are finished answering the questions, use the scoring sheet to give yourself two scores. First, calculate an overall score. Then, give yourself an average score for each mastery principle. Your overall score will be between 49 and 196. Your average score for each principle will be between 1 and 4.

I just reviewed the mastery self-assessment and would like to use this tool with teachers to assess their practiceas we end the school year. This is great to use and begin to formulate goals for next year based on their scores and areas that they identify as needing improvement.
I made a graphic display of my staff’s data and showed it by department and grade levels. We looked at trends and patterns. Then teachers created goals based on their chosen principle and found a “buddy” that would support them on their professional growth journey. What an amazing assessment Robyn!
